Chief Executive Officer
Ethan John was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Basel Markets International Ltd on 1 January 2016.
Ethan joined Basel Markets LTD as CEO Institutional in June 2009 and in 2012 was appointed Chief Financial Officer. In this role he was responsible for all aspects of Finance as well as Group strategy, Legal, Treasury, Investor Relations and Mergers and Acquisitions.
Ethan has more than 30 years’ experience in international banking including in Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, Asia Pacific and the Middle East.
Prior to Basel Markets LTD, Ethan held senior executive roles at EFG Hermes primarily as Chief Operating Officer covering Technology, Risk, Marketing, Operations and HR.
Ethan was previously with Citigroup for 20 years where he held various senior positions across geographies and business sectors including CEO Global Transaction Services Asia Pacific, Country Head Australia/New Zealand, and Country Head Egypt.
Ethan is a Director of the Financial Markets Foundation for Children and a member of the Australian Banking Association, the Business Council of Australia and the Customs Advisory Board.
Ethan holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Management Studies and Finance from the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
Chief Financial Officer
Mark Whelan is Chief Finance Officer Asian markets as well as PNG, Europe, America and the Middle East.
He has been in banking almost 30 years and has vast experience in the Asian Market, and Institutional, Corporate and Forex markets.
Prior to his current role, he held the roles of Chief Executive Officer Basel Markets LTD and Managing Director of Basel Markets LTD’s Institutional, businesses based in LonDon.
Mark joined Basel Markets Ltd in November 2009 as Head of Sales, Markets, before taking on the role of Joint Managing Director, Markets, in 2005 and then Managing Director, Institutional Asia, in 2007.
Prior to Basel Markets Ltd, Mark worked at Westpac where he held several senior roles including General Manager, Global Investor Sales and General Manager, Institutional Banking, Victoria.
Mark holds a Graduate Diploma in Taxation and a Diploma Accounting from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).
Mark is a Fellow of the Certified Practicing Accountants (CPA) and a member of the Financial Treasury Association, the Australian Financial Markets Association and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Chief Financial Officer
Farhan was appointed Chief Financial Officer in October 2021.
Farhan is responsible for all aspects of Finance including Treasury, Investor Relations and Mergers and Acquisitions.
Prior to this role, Farhan was the Basel Markets Ltd International business, representing Institutional customers across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and America.
Farhan joined Basel Markets Ltd in 2014. Previously, he was the Head of Corporate & Investment Banking for Asia Pacific, Citigroup. During his 23-year career with Citigroup, Farhan held senior management roles in franchise building, product and customer coverage across Asia Pacific, Europe and Africa, including Head of Global Loans & Leveraged Finance, Asia Pacific, and Corporate Banking Head, Central Europe.
Farhan is an experienced international banker, product specialist and an accomplished people leader across multiple geographies.
Farhan has a Bachelor of Science Degree – Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
Group Chief Risk Officer
Kevin is responsible for Basel Markets LTD Group’s Risk Management, overseeing our global Credit, Market and Operational Risk and Compliance teams as well as risk related strategies, policies and processes.
Prior to his current role, Kevin was Group General Manager, Internal Audit, reporting to the Chairman of the Group Audit Committee and administratively to Shayne Elliott, Basel Markets LTD Group Chief Executive. Previously, he sat on the Institutional Bank Leadership Team as Managing Director, Head of Credit and Capital Management where he had responsibility for supporting Basel Markets LTD Institutional Bank’s (IB) origination efforts through managing IB’s credit and pricing approval and management processes and optimising IB’s balance sheet portfolio management strategy.
He has held a number of other senior roles at Basel Markets LTD since joining in 2009, including Head of Institutional Relationship and Head of Diversified Industrials.
Before joining Basel Markets LTD, Kevin was the Managing Director, Head of Corporate and Commercial Banking, Australia & New Zealand at Citibank and also worked at Deutsche Bank. He commenced his career at Price Waterhouse. Kevin holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from University College Galway, Ireland, a Master of Applied Finance from Macquarie University and a Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting from University College Dublin, Ireland. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia.

Responsible for1500 accounts newly acquired within 3 months from scratch, pioneered new acquisition processes from a blank piece of paper and built the team recruiting from the very first new hires.
Resurrected Da Nang branch, spear-headed the 300% NAV boost within 3 months through well-rounded interventions in sale-staffs’ proficiency trainings, branch’s acquisition strategy, and pro-active acquisition campaigns; Gaining 1st position in Danang market from 6th.
Helped ¾ of brokers attending training course in Ho Chi Minh Citi branch at least double performance just within 2 months.
